Think positive: see it, read it and believe it

When you’re feeling stressed, it can be hard to feel good about yourself. Positive words can really help.

Saying and writing positive phrases, or ‘affirmations’, can make you feel better about yourself. Studies have also shown that positive affirmations can improve your memory and performance, and help to solve problems under stress. So, they are great when you’ve got maths tests or other exams coming up.

Positive affirmations to repeat every day

  • Today, I choose to have a good day
  • I am calm, confident and clever
  • My brain is powerful
  • Mistakes are an opportunity to learn something new
  • I am proud of what I have achieved today

You can also download these positive affirmations as screensavers below so you can carry them with you on your phone.

Write, repeat, believe

Try writing some of these positive affirmations on cards or post-it notes. Put them up where you can see them, in your bedroom or where you study.

Repeat these phrases out loud a few times each day. Try doing it in front of the mirror when you get ready in the mornings.

The more you say and think these phrases, the easier it will be for your mind and body to believe them.

Create your own

Why not have a go at writing your own positive phrases? Think about what makes you stressed or anxious and write something to help beat that feeling.
